The Sandpiper Hotel

Holetown, St. James BB24017 Barbados West Indies

When you think of Barbados, it’s the three S’s that come to mind: sunshine, sand and sea. Now, thanks to the fresh look at The Sandpiper, you can add ‘style’ to the list. Emerging from a revamp toward the end of last year, the beachfront property – little sister to the famed Coral Reef Club – is a superb pick for a touch of West Indies class. Along the white sands of Discovery Bay on the island’s calm west coast, this small, luxury hotel has serious charm. As a family-run resort, a pleasing presence can be felt in the design, which helps maintain the synergy of the space superbly. Set within Bougainvillea-filled gardens, acid green meets the sparkling blue of the Caribbean Sea, while a super slick new 18m lap pool is at the heart of the property. Loungers wallow in the shallows of the water, perfectly positioned for languid toe- dipping, while palms provide shade from the heat of the day. Harold’s Bar is on hand with a long list of moreish cocktails. It’s sun-worshipping made easy – an intimate atmosphere that’s perfect for whiling away lazy days. Kick back, grab a coconut water and watch the hummingbirds flutter by. The cleverly designed guest rooms, framed by the glorious gardens, evoke an elegant style that’s more than your typical Caribbean colour palette. Yes, there’s the crisp white and sharp accents you’d expect, but it’s less clinical, less clichéd and more chic. Dark heavy wood, stacks of books and rich upholstery add balance to proceedings. Private balconies and terraces nestled amid the lush greenery offer warm respite and the perfect spot to take breakfast; the new suites have a coastal theme that leans towards New England over Brits abroad. If you’re feeling active, The Coral Reef Club has a host of facilities including tennis courts, the spa with its beautiful Balinese- style courtyard and a range of watersports. There’s also a not-to- be-missed lunch offering at the beachside restaurant. BG.
