The Bell at Ramsbury Hotel

The Square, Ramsbury, Marlborough SN8 2PE

This is not your ordinary country pub. Set on the Ramsbury Estate in Wiltshire, The Bell has its own brewery, distillery, smokehouse and farm. Start in the bar for a pint of its hand-pulled traditional ales such as Ramsbury Gold and Flint Knapper, then move to the restaurant when hunger strikes. Tartan seating, white linen and fresh flowers could come off as stuffy but the dining room manages to combine its chic atmosphere with exposed wooden beams and warming fireplaces.

We loved asparagus with poached duck egg, Ibérico ham and truffle, while black cherry foie gras with seared pigeon and chocolate purée was a decadent surprise.

Finish with a nightcap of the house vodka before bedding down in one of nine rooms. Each is named after a game bird or fish, complete with patterned cushions and framed art. Expect underfloor heating in the bathrooms and Hypnos mattresses that are all too easy to sink into.
