Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas 4. Butter the slices of bread and lay half of them in an ovenproof dish, buttered-side up. Sprinkle on the raisins and then lay the other slices on top, buttered-side down, like a sandwich. Bring the milk to the boil and pour it over the bread sandwiches. Set aside. Put the butter, sugar and syrup in a small pan, place on the stove and gently heat through. Once the mixture is simmering, let it bubble away for 4 minutes. Pour this toffee sauce over the bread sandwiches and pop the dish in the oven for 15 minutes. Serve with cream.
