41 Buckingham Gate, London SW1E 6AF
Away from the hustle synonymous with an SW1 postcode, Sriram Aylur’s Michelin- starred Quilon offers welcome respite. Once inside, the only thing that could jolt you back into place is the toll of the resident division bell that calls MPs from their curries back to their position in the House and reminds them there are decisions to be made. In terms of clientele, it’s as popular with young families as it is with politicians; an unpretentious air pervades the contemporary dining room. A seafood-heavy menu of south-west Indian cuisine and Aylur’s light dishes showcase expertly nuanced flavours bringing together the cuisines of Goa and Kerala. Start with mini masala dosa served with deliciously crispy cauliflower. Follow with lightly spiced halibut curry, its raw mango sauce elevating it to something really special. Sides should include tempura-style okra and egg paratha. Pachadi (pineapple and pomegranate) makes a great accompaniment to the baked sea bass. A dessert of pistachio cake with black sesame concludes things nicely.
