Bethlen Estates Hotel

Romania

Swerving the tropes associated with Transylvania, yet rooted in its heritage, is this recently launched family project comprising three restored houses on the site of medieval Bethlen Castle in Criş. Flanked by virgin forests and flower-specked meadows, bucolic respite is in abundance. From the four-bed Caretaker’s House (complete with pool), to rooms in the Corner Barn, interiors blend old and new to harmonious effect. Rural pursuits range from riding, fishing and hiking to adventurous HeliBiking and bear watching. Cultural expeditions might include a self-driving tour of the Transalpina Road or sightseeing the pastel-hued merchant houses of Unesco town Sighişoara. The on-site Kitchen Barn will keep you fired up with local fare, but make time for a picnic combined with hunting for black summer truffles followed by wine tasting in the Manor House.

Doubles from £252 (2-night min); Caretaker’s House from £1,176 (2-night min). 00 40 745 541 090, bethlenestates.com
