Bodysgallen Hall & Spa Hotel

Llandudno, Wales

Bodysgallen is thought to mean either ‘house among thistles’ or the ‘abode of Cadwallon’, a sixth-century chieftain, but there’s nothing spiky about this place. Various buildings have stood here: a watchtower for nearby Conwy Castle from the 13th century, and then an Elizabethan home. Most of the house, however, dates back to the 17th century. It has since been lovingly transformed into one of the finest country house hotels in Wales with 31 suites, 16 of which are in cottages (some of them dog-friendly) in the grounds of Bodysgallen. The rooms are classically appointed, with many enjoying views across the beautiful countryside. The restaurant, headed up by John Williams, showcases the best local produce in its award-winning menus. The gardens are a highlight, too, with more than 80ha of wooded parkland and walled gardens in the Arts and Crafts style to walk in. Plus, there’s the spa, for an energising massage, before exploring this dramatic part of North Wales.
