Conservatorium Hotel

Amsterdam

Right in the heart of the city’s impressive museum quarter, a few minutes’ stroll from The Van Gogh Museum and The Rijksmuseum, this 19th-century pleasure dome has always been a place to meet and mingle. Initially built as a bank before being converted into a music school, it is now a cool, contemporary hotel with such impressive communal areas locals affectionately call it ‘Amsterdam’s living room’. Milan-based Piero Lissoni is the visionary behind the interiors, including the architectural atrium, a glass box which towers three storeys high, where excellent breakfasts are served (we particularly recommend the fresh juices). Original features such as mosaics and arched stone ceilings mingle quirkily with industrial materials, while the service is spot on. Informal and very personal, which is a rarity in a hotel this size. Set aside at least one evening to dine at Taiko, a contemporary Japanese restaurant which specialises in impeccably fresh sashimi. The toro tuna is particularly special. The wellness centre has quickly become the foremost in the city. Divided into four zones which replicate the seasons, it includes a hammam, moodily lit designer pool and expansive treatment menu. Don’t miss a hot sea shell massage, which left us in an almost trance-like state of zen. Doubles from £370.
