Georgian Stables Hotel

41 Sydney Buildings, Bath

Not that you ever need a reason to visit Bath in all its honey-coloured Georgian splendour, but there is good reason why it is renowned as one of Britain’s most festive cities. Even were it not for the Christmas markets, you’d still visit Bath’s maze of streets in search of something a bit unique from the many independent shops to be found around every corner. But for this you need a base and, when you’re looking for a bed and breakfast, they don’t come more refreshing than the Georgian Stables at Smallcombe House. Head down the steep horse ramp next to the Regency period house, part of Sydney Buildings, and you’ll find yourself in the cobbled courtyard of the stables, which have been converted in a one-bedroom en-suite with a lounge. Inside, they’ve used the space well, carefully blending old and new. Original brickwork acts as an alcove for the bed, while the decor is clean and white with splashes of red and cute bits of furniture such as sea chests and tables made out of musical drums. Outside, you can enjoy the beauty of Smallcombe House’s terraced gardens, which slope down to the Kennet and Avon canal. Cereals, juices, bread and fruit are already in your room and hot meals can be ordered the night before and eaten outside in the courtyard or the garden. A double room is also available inside the main house, but for your own little bolthole, go for the stables. AM. Doubles from £99. 01225 465956, view.co.uk/bath
