Solihull might be one of Birmingham’s posher suburbs, but it still seems a rather incongruous location for a gothic mansion, albeit one that makes the perfect setting-off point for a trip to Warwick Castle. Splashes of colour enliven the fixtures and there’s a witty feel to the luxury. Rooms come with a coffee grinder, fresh beans and an envelope labelled ‘illegal substances’ (which contains Nescafé). What Hampton does really well is food, so don’t miss Rob Palmer’s tasting menu, which has won a Michelin star. Doubles from £180.
