Hintlesham Hall Hotel Hintlesham Ipswich Suffolk IP8 3NS
Amid gently sloping Suffolk countryside, the gabled manor of Hintlesham Hall stands at the end of a driveway that seems to go on forever. Built in the time of Elizabeth I, this Grade I-listed property has every excuse for being a little worn in places, but creaky floorboards and dust on the centuries-old fittings only adds to its charm. Wooden-beamed rooms of all shapes and sizes are jumbled together in the different wings, connected by a tangle of staircases. All are decorated with antiques, oil paintings and tapestries. Owner Dee Lundy is slowly but meticulously restoring the property and grounds to their former glory. The dining room menu is classic – very much in keeping with the setting. From £150.
