Hotel de la Plage Hotel

France

Straddling the coast near the point where France meanders into Spain, beachside-chic melds with nautical nous in this laidback pad whose design credentials hold their own on the international scene

Speaking the international language of design, this contemporary pick could transpose itself anywhere from the Californian coast to Brisbane or Tel Aviv and look as if it’s always been there. But it’s the Basque city of Biarritz that Hotel de la Plage calls home. Saturated in coastalchic vibes –all modern-heritage hues, local craft pieces, abstract art, mid-century furniture, wave-like rippled headboards and beadboard panelling – its welcoming, aesthetic appeal was revealed just last summer.

Offering a total of 20 rooms, the boutique pad overlooks the city’s idiosyncratic Bay of Biscay coastline, with the sheltered slip of Plage du Port Vieux beckoning from below. France’s last port before you reach Spain, it’s the ideal jumping-off point for exploring the neighbourhood. A visit could take you on a wander through the historic streets, lined with old fisherman’s cottages that roll down to the Rocher de la Vierge islet – which can be seen from many of the bedroom terraces – and on to the harbour and its litany of seafood restaurants.

Back in situ, a concise, gently nautical ‘deli’ space embodies the locale, with one foot firmly in France, the other in Spain. For guests, that translates as a help-yourself-style pantry of small-plate picks ranging from fresh sardines and tuna belly with Espelette pepper to duck foie gras and fine cheeses all sourced from choice suppliers, with the ocean looming large on the horizon. You can mix it up by taking breakfast – local and lovely – or aperitifs and snacks on the rooftop, a
dappled affair blessed with cooling sea breezes during the summer
months. Although there’s always the library lounge for a moment’s respite, where you’ll find an equally gorgeous view to take in, with the added attraction of books and magazines and plenty of peoplewatching opportunities.

Whether you’re in the area to surf, stopping off as part of a longer road trip, or simply looking to explore a new city, the unfussy, informal approach of Hotel de la Plage makes for the perfect out-and-about weekender.
