Dubai
Sitting pretty in the Dubai sunshine, this sprawling resort will keep you entertained in style from dawn to dusk, with its vast network of walkways leading to brilliant basking, dining and pampering options.
As is the way with most things in Dubai, the Jumeirah resort is big. Very big. Sweeping along a sizeable strip of the city coastline marked by the iconic, sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, what began as one flagship property has grown into a network of hotels within hotels connected by creek-like waterways. But where others may well have failed, Jumeirah has managed to carve a niche in providing a guest experience that makes Dar Al Masyaf seem like a unique, singular entity that benefits from, rather than being defined by the whole.
Set at the northern reach of the resort proper, and taking its design inspiration from traditional Arabian summerhouses, the hotel is arranged in a cluster of two-storey enclaves, each home to four generously sized suites. A tall, intricately carved wooden door reveals an inner courtyard featuring Masyaf pool, a peaceful, palm-framed a comfortable bar-lounge area, before revealing your own private space.
The suites themselves are defined by an elegantly opulent design that balances tradition with modernity: oversized beds are framed by a rich canopy and latticework shutters; metal coffee tables and lampshades feature detailed filigree; a walk-in shower reveals quietly gilded tiles and sublimely scented amenities.
From your own garden patio or sea-
view terrace, you’ll be disturbed only
by the odd peacock or colourful hoopoe
(look out for a crown of orange feathers
and long, hummingbird-like beak),
while a pootle to the beach reveals
private infinity pool Celeste, which is
off limits to other Jumeirah guests.
Or else follow hushed paths filled with
the scent of frangipani to the Dar Al Masyaf pool, a peaceful, palm-framed haven which, on our visit, saw no more
than four other people at any one time.
Sunscreens and water are provided,
and it’s worth being there around 11am,
when the thirst-quenchingly good
coconut lollies do the rounds.
Facilities to explore elsewhere on site include the excellent Talise spa and a truly staggering range of quality restaurants: don’t miss the superb modern Chinese Zheng He’s or the iconic Friday brunch at Arboretum at the palatial Jumeirah Al Qasr.
All bookings include private airport transfers and butler service, and for those looking for a blast of winter sun, the resort has been awarded the Bureau Veritas Safeguard label, for the highest standards of hygiene and safety measures.
