La Esperanza Hotel

Spain

Inner courtyard

Those seeking an authentic break should look no further than the sun-kissed shores of southern Spain, where Sierra Nevada’s peaks and valleys provide an evocative backdrop for hotel La Esperanza Granada. A traditional hacienda, it takes inspiration from the Unseco-listed Alhambra fortress in nearby Granada. The 5ha estate – complete with pool, spa and tennis court – is pocketed with orange, lemon and olive trees and there’s a large courtyard for stargazing with a glass of DO Jerez-Xérès-Sherry in hand.

Old-world elegance is emulated inside with hand-painted frescoes, a bespoke dining table flecked with lapis lazuli and more than a handful of art and antiques, including a grand 1903 Bechstein piano. For the best room in the house check into the master suite, where a Juliet balcony seals the deal. Soak up the culture with a flamenco dance class, horse trek or paella class with the chef – you’ll never want to leave.
