278 West George Street, Glasgow
While it may be part of a chain (albeit a small one), no one can claim that Malmaison doesn’t make an effort to keep its branches distinct – after all, their hotel in Glasgow is housed in a former Episcopal church. The exterior belies its origins, and is nicely restored, while the interiors have been given over to Mal’s classic contemporary, comfortable furnishings. Seventy-two rooms are decked out in neutral tones and comfortable, textured fabrics; there is a gym, and a popular bar with good cocktails. The West George Street location means that some of the city’s best shopping and restaurants are only a stroll away, but should you not be inclined to make the effort, then the Brasserie’s grill-heavy menu should hit the spot. Doubles from £135.
