Shiodome Media Tower 1-7-1 Higashi Shimbashi, Minato-ku 1057227 Tokyo
In a corner of Tokyo’s vast and somewhat bewildering landscape, the Park Hotel occupies an enviable 10-floor eyrie atop a shiny skyscraper. From here the eagle-eyed can set their sights on the spotlit shopping hubs of Ginza and Shibuya, but those with west-facing rooms are likely to be beguiled by the night-time panorama of a twinkling city skyline punctuated by the crimson-and-white Tokyo Tower, a 1950s nod to Monsieur Eiffel’s Parisian icon. Accommodation is simple and elegant with the emphasis on nocturnal comfort – the hotel employs a specialist pillow fitter with the sole aim of ensuring that this important bit of ‘bedding tackle’ meets every guest’s needs. But don’t enjoy the plumped feathers until too late in the morning: throw open the curtains at dawn and follow the plummeting view down 30 floors to be reminded that the bustling Tsukiji Fish Market and neighbouring Hama Rikyu Garden, perhaps the city’s finest park, are just a hop and a skip away. Yoshiaki Takada, chef of the hotel’s Japanese restaurant Hansanshou, heads to the market each Friday and his choice of the catch will be a defining element in one of his sublime offerings. The lunchtime bento is a box of jewels that combines astonishing creativity with fine ingredients such as vegetables from Kyoto’s market gardeners. For something exotic (in these parts at least), head for the Michelin-starred French restaurant Tateru Yoshino – the titular chef also runs Paris’ equally well-awarded Stella Maris – or a massage at the hotel’s Institut de Phyto-Aromathérapie salon to invigorate the mind and body for another day’s sightseeing.
Why go? For a calming haven in a prime, lofty location.
