Playa Vik José Ignacio Hotel

Uruguay

Set in a relaxed fishing town, and taking full advantage of its South Atlantic Ocean viewpoint, the ubermodern Playa Vik is an architectural delight. Surprisingly, the angular building blends well into its striking surroundings thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, natural stone and a roof garden. Inside, in contrast, three suites and six separate ‘casas’ are bright and bold, styled with upscaled beach chic in mind and featuring plenty of Uruguayan art. All eyes are on the elongated black granite pool that unites sky and sea by day and twinkles by night, illuminated by the celestial map. Slow days begin with yoga, followed by horse riding on the beach, mountain biking or perhaps a spot of surfing but are sure to end with a family-style dinner of grilled seafood or grass-fed beef, followed by a glass of tannat around the fire pit.
