Two Bridges Dartmoor Devon
It’s of little surprise that Dartmoor has two entrants – its rugged other-wordly beauty is so captivating. And here, at Prince Hall – one of the ancient tenements of the area – you’re right in the centre of it, driving through country miles of winding moorland (populated seemingly only by ponies and sheep) to discover this 18th-century mansion. Views from the rooms, dining hall, lounge and hall, take in the panoramas with the River Dart flowing by just an acre or so in front. Even if you hate walking, it’s hard to resist a bit of a yomp. There’s a shepherd’s hut for those wanting something different for the night, but, in all honesty, retiring from the roaring fire and deep-buttoned chairs of the eclectic but cosy lounge to the eight rooms upstairs is far more appealing. The restaurant is simple and elegant but offers plates with plenty of punch. Their own pigs provide not only sausages and bacon for breakfast but also belly to be braised and served with parsley pommes purée, veg and apple just for a dinner menu that includes the kind of rich country fare befitting the venue (racks of lamb, game). For afters? Sticky toffee pudding, what else? Doubles from £230, including dinner.
