Pulitzer Hotel

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This landmark property is the brainchild of Peter Pulitzer, grandson of the Pulitzer Prize founder, who, in 1960, purchased 12 dilapidated, canal-side gabled houses to incarnate what is now the city’s oldest five-star hotel. Over the years, he snapped up neighbouring sites, culminating in a 2016 redesign totalling 25 interconnected 1600s merchant homes – the one-time sites of business deals and Golden Age decadence alike.

Across 225 rooms, eclectic interiors blend modern craftsmanship with historic artworks, while courtyard gardens assist in unifying the buildings. Set in Nine Streets, Amsterdam’s highlights are all within striking distance. As much for locals as it is for travellers, lunch at bistro Janz or drinks at the speakeasy bar offer a true snapshot of city life.
