Bakuriani, Georgia
Slip off radar to Georgia, where
Kokhta, the third member of the
Rooms Hotels family brings ‘wild modernism’ (and a little
brutalism) to one of the country’s
top ski resorts, Bakuriani in the
Lesser Caucasus Mountains.
Surrounded by snow-capped
pines, rustic-chic interiors pay
homage to Georgia’s heritage –
see the huge clay pots resembling
qvevris (terracotta vessels used in
ancient wine production) dotted
throughout. The 95 forest-view
rooms blend luxury furnishings
and all-natural materials like
chestnut wood, stone and clay,
and the lobby-library, with its fire and
prehistoric-style art, is a fine spot to
enjoy a hot tea with a spoon of pine
cone jam, a local favourite. The
open-fire restaurant is all floor-to-
ceiling windows and masculine wood
work, serving modern Georgian
classics from a farm-to-table menu.
It’s ski-in ski-out here, but it’s a cosy
base for off-piste action too. There
are natural hot springs and nature
reserves nearby, and lovely hiking
routes for later in the year. Tack on a
day or two to admire the architecture
of Tbilisi –a three-hour drive away.
