Salthouse Harbour Hotel

1 Neptune Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk

Overlooking the harbour on Ipswich’s waterfront, it’s easy to imagine that The Salthouse was once a warehouse – red brick prevails. Step inside, mind you, and the vibe is altogether sleeker – modern and quirky, the interior brimming with nautical-themed touches (very appropriate, considering the setting), plush, fuzzy fabrics and striking sculptures. The designer must certainly have had fun here, judging by the multiple appearances of zebra print – you wouldn’t be wrong to call this a gallery as much as a hotel. Many of the 70 rooms have water views and feature cavernous copper bathtubs in which to soak while watching the sun set, and REN products add a luxurious touch to the bathing experience. Locally sourced partridge, beef, lamb and venison set the theme on the solidly British menu in the atmospheric downstairs restaurant. There is a bountiful choice of wines by the glass, with drops from both old world and new well represented. Doubles from £100.
