The Ampersand Hotel

10 Harrington Road, London,

This spanking new South Kensington boutique hotel is more plush than palatial. The beds look like they were designed for a latter-day Greta Garbo to pose on. Upholstery in the rooms leans towards a padded look; carpeting and curtains are lavish. In contrast, the modern lighting is bright but easily dimmed from the bed. Front of house, the drawing room is among the most attractive small lounges in the capital. It works equally well as a champagne bar and salon de thé. A private dining room, library and games room complete the impression of a country house in town. Breakfast in Apero kicks off early (from 6.30am) with full, as well as buffet, service. Coffee is fragrant and there’s a choice of teas. With so many good restaurants (Tom Aikens, Rasoi, Launceston Place) within walking distance, the hotel has gone for Mediterranean menus at bistro prices. MR. Rooms from £175.
