The Anchor Inn Hotel

Lower Froyle, Alton, Hampshire GU34 4NA

Part of the Miller’s Collection, a staunchly English group of period inns championing the ‘country way of life’, The Anchor is a treasure trove of army memorabilia, including old maps and military paintings. A bar opens onto the dining room, an airy space with dark green, wood-panelled walls. Faux-rustic touches pepper proceedings, such as woolly blankets draped over the chairs, and warm, doughy hunks of bread served in battered Hovis bread tins. As you’d expect, the menu hangs on British classics. The devilled whitebait has a good kick and crispiness, and the tasty smoked haddock is topped with Welsh rarebit glaze and a poached egg. With their well-stocked book shelves, grand paintings, wonky wooden beams and plaid blankets, the five delightful bedrooms, ensure that the thoroughly British feel continues until bedtime.
