Hetton, Near Skipton, North Yorkshire
This is an archetypal gourmet bolthole, a picture-postcard English inn crammed with log fires, dark oak beams, nooks, crannies and food to appease any critic. Not that you should think this is the kind of place where they just slam a chunk of meat and splash of sauce on the plate – far from it. This is intricate, well-thought out food: a favourite is The Angel’s Little Moneybag: seafood in crispy pastry with lobster sauce. Rare breed suckling pig is treated as it should be, served with Bramley apple potato, swede and pepper purée, black pudding boudin and cider sauce. Nine rooms are available, some in a converted barn. Doubles from £140.
