Nr Zennor St. Ives, Cornwall
The Gurnard’s Head is a pint-sized inn located on the Atlantic coast with the surf on one side, turf on the other. The entrance leads straight into the pub, where the décor is all beams, mismatched wooden tables, flagstone floors and lots of local art. Upstairs, the few bedrooms are charming, with checked blinds, old dressers and dog-eared books. Order a homemade packed lunch and set off to explore or stay for a menu crammed full of local fish and produce. Inventive chef Bruce Rennie (ex-Wishart) serves up food far beyond pub grub, such as scallops, sweetcorn cream, black pudding and apple; pollock, pig’s trotter, galette potato, braised endive and gribiche sauce; or plaice, vermouth, muscat grapes, tarragon and new potatoes. Doubles from £97.50.
