This coaching inn, deep in the Scottish countryside, has long been a destination for food-lovers. It’s run by Geoffrey and Katherine Smeddle; he’s a top-class chef and she’s in charge of everything else. In the separate ’80s-built stone and timber building are seven spacious two-level suites and one single-level suite, each with lovely views of the garden. Continental breakfast is delivered to your room every morning. It’s a light start to the day after one of Geoffrey’s French-style creations the night before. Leave room for the roast tournedos of beef sirloin with creamed Swiss chard, chanterelles and red wine sauce on the six-course tasting menu. Doubles from £195.
