Crosthwaite, Lyth Valley, Cumbria
Located in the village of Crosthwaite, next to the parish church, the inn offers nine recently refurbished rooms with seriously comfortable beds, roll-top baths, power showers and underfloor heating – extremely welcome after a day’s tramping on the fells. If you like space to stretch, you could opt for the Noble room, occupying the whole of the third floor. In the restaurant, the modern menu emphasises seasonality and locally sourced produce with a twice-baked Lancashire cheese soufflé and whole roast plaice with spinach purée, clams and pink grapefruit. Doubles from £105.
