2259 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, Hawaii
When the ‘pink palace’ of Waikiki first opened over ten acres of beachfront in 1927, Hawaii’s most iconic stretch of sand had just one other hotel on it – and the only way to the islands was via five days at sea. Nearly a century later, a lot has changed around here. But this old gal, whose CV includes a US Navy lease during World War II, and an extensive refurbishment in the 2000s, remains Waikiki’s most iconic pad. Rooms may have been modernised but the signature pink hue remains. The gardens and public spaces are worth exploring even if you’re not staying here but you’ll need to book a room with a view of Honolulu’s iconic Diamond Head for the full experience. The seafood at restaurant Azure is first rate, while sinking Mai Tais at the bar is absolutely essential. After all, it was here that the tipple was invented. AM, Doubles from £200.
