The Williamsburg Hotel Hotel

New York, USA

This brick-clad heritage building – once the water tower – took its place presiding over Wythe Avenue in 2017. Since then, it’s become a firm favourite on New York’s boutique-bed bucket-list and is a choice crashpad for any visit to the city. Cool as they come, the creative neighbourhood hotspot is just over the East River from Manhattan’s East Village. A spiral staircase leads to the easy parquet-lined bar and lobby, where street artist Eric Rieger’s enigmatic installation sees thousands of strands of mutlicoloured-yarn take centre stage, framing locals tapping on laptops and chums toasting free afternoons. Bedrooms are a tiled and textured dream of New England whitewash, turquoise, rainy-day grey, brass and marble. Leather bedheads bring a sense of home, while Brooklyn cosmetic brand Apotheke take care of amenities. Entry-level rooms are on the small side for longer stays; try the corner Studio Terrace, with views over both Manhattan and Brooklyn. After bagels in bed, days are best spent by the rooftop pool or exploring the brilliant restaurants and food markets in the area. You can borrow bikes for exploring, but the hotel’s tuk-tuk is super-handy for lifts to the subway station into Manhattan, a ten-minute walk.
