Località Il Borro 1, Arezzo
Il Borro’s story is almost too picturesque to be believed. Italian fashion magnate Ferruccio Ferragamo was hunting in a Tuscan forest when he stumbled across an abandoned village choked by olive trees. Impressed by the medieval ruins and beauty of the surrounding area he bought the entire 1,000ha estate. Fast forward 20 years and the village is now a luxurious retreat, comprising a handful of stunning rental villas ideal for groups and families, and suites and apartments for cosy couples’ getaways.
The ancient facades have been lovingly restored, and updated inside too, so you’ll find a chic attention to detail in the fittings and furnishings. There is a decent spa and an outdoor pool, and a host of activities including horse riding and wine tasting to choose from. The family’s vineyards fan out around the estate – meaning you won’t have far to go for great drops. Which brings us to the real draw – Osteria del Borro, a destination restaurant worth travelling for.
A professional brigade assembles each dish with panache, visible behind glass screens. Tuscan ingredients shine, with plenty of seasonal selection. We dined on red peppers with anchovies and burrata cream; octopus gnocchi; and lamb with apricots. Perfect washed down with their signature red. JW. Doubles from £165.
