Staffordshire
Three years ago Chris Lewis took over a vacant shop in Stafford town centre. Today, with his wife Dawn, he runs it as a successful deli. Inside, you’ll find the shelves stocked with a range of Staffordshire produce including locally made cooking sauces, marinades and pickles, such as Greengate chutney, a lightly spiced, sweet and fruity green grape and date chutney that has been specially created for the deli. Try the cracotti, double-baked savoury crackers that go particularly well with rich, creamy cow’s cheese such as Wreken White or oak-smoked Newport, which you can pick up from the cheese counter. The deli counter prepares freshly made sandwiches to order, from classic BLT to smoked salmon with lemon and dill crème fraîche. Warm yourself up with something from the hot specials menu – choose from braised beef and onions in Staffordshire beer or for something more exotic, the Moroccan lamb. Be sure also to sample local beer Stone Brood from Lymestone brewery, made with honey from their own hives. If you are visiting in January, expect homemade Stilton, pear and walnut tarts, thyme and brandy chicken liver pâté, and sticky toffee pudding with warm toffee sauce.
