Cumbria
Before reaching the doors of Low Sizergh Barn, you’ll have already seen where most of their produce comes from. The working dairy farm keeps 700 hens, 150 Holstein and Swedish red dairy cows and 70 sheep, not to mention an abundance of fruit and vegetables. In February and March, purple sprouting broccoli, leeks, winter salad leaves, apples and pears will be delivered direct from farm to shop by wheelbarrow. Windermere Ice Cream Company use the farm’s milk in their products as does JJ Sandham Ltd, which makes wonderful cheeses including the Kendal Creamy and Crumbly. The cheeses are the perfect accompaniment to damson gumbo, a tangy, sweet chutney made by Mary Harkness based in Crosthwaite. Traditional Cumberland sausages are extremely popular and customers tend to remain loyal to those supplied by Cartmel Valley Game and Higginsons of Grange. Pop into the rustic tea room for home-made goodies including shepherd’s pie with parsnip mash, potato and watercress soup, fluffy scones, crunchy apple pies and slices of walnut cake.
