Lombard St, Petworth, GU28 0AG
Found in a Grade I-listed building on the South Downs, The Hungry Guest reminds us why visiting a deli is always better than going to the supermarket. You don’t just find carefully selected local products, you walk away with extra knowledge too.
Take its humidity and temperature-controlled cheese room. Filled with artisan cheeses, you could happily spend most of your Saturday morning in here. Whether you’re planning a cheeseboard or looking to up the ante on your sandwiches, the staff are eager to help. Each has been trained in the different varieties so they can tell you where it’s from, how long it lasts, where you can keep it, what it pairs well with and, most importantly, what is in its prime right now.
Head towards the butcher’s counter, where 90 per cent of the products are broken down from the carcass. We love the house sausages which include salt and pepper chipolatas, venison and Wagyu beef.
However, the bakery is the first thing you’ll notice when you walk in, with more than 30 loaves baked fresh every day. And make sure you don’t miss the indulgent brownies, which are stuffed with cranberries and Brazil nuts in the run-up to Christmas.
