Pray to Navarre at Alta
It’s almost compulsory to love the food of northern Spain, and in Alta we have a new, ahem, altar at which to pray, in London’s Kingly Court, off Carnaby Street. Alta isn’t messing about when it sets its stall out in the Navarre region, but don’t worry if you’re not familiar with local delicacies: this is just really good food: crunchy pork crackers to scoop up crispy pork belly bits soaking in an orange mojo rojo sauce; tender venison in a rich juniper and beetroot sauce; Basque cheesecake (of course); and, topping it all, chocolate, bread and olive oil – akin to a decadent, open-top s’mores, with campfire-smoky ‘marshmallow’ (white soy meringue). Drinks are no less exceptional: don’t miss the hot buttered cider – perhaps the most perfect winter drink.
