Bleeding Heart Yard, Farringdon, London
Handily situated in London’s diamond district, this gem of a restaurant began life as a tavern in 1746 when its slogan was ‘drunk for a penny and dead drunk for tuppence’. While it may cost rather more nowadays, this raison d’être is alive and well with over 450 varieties of wine on offer, including several labels from the owner’s vineyard (try the 2011 Viognier). The food is a perfect marriage of British produce, including Scottish salmon and lamb from the restaurant’s organic herd, and new French cuisine. Wood-panelled recesses are lit by candles and lend themselves to a little canoodling. IL.
