Tsilivi, Zante
Saunter up the polished stone steps, past the bamboo lanterns, and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled upon the wedding venue of a Hollywood power couple. The space – all hand-trowelled plaster walls fringed with olive trees – is divine. Low-slung rattan chairs float around an infinity pool, while a tropical palm-leaf roof adds to the sybaritic- meets-boho vibe. Not what you’d expect of a hotel restaurant on the Greek island of Zante.
The menu is creative Mediterranean. To start, a two-tier dish of what looks to be tree bark atop edible soil arrives. We soon realise it’s a mix of dried olives, olive salt and spinach, while biting into the ‘bark’ reveals silken aubergine. Underneath is a perfect pasta parcel filled with goat’s cheese. Rich chunks of tender beef cheek draped with porcini slithers follow.
The best is saved until last: an excellent Manchego panna cotta drizzled with local honey and finished with pollen, salted caramel tuiles and rose-water ice cream. The elevated, hillside locale means a generous portion of sunset is served alongside the masterful menu: book for 8pm to bask in the glow.
