Best known for its wood-fired grill – one of the largest in London – Hammer & Tongs imports native woods such as sickle bush and blackthorn to create some of the most authentic South African plates in the capital. Chef Martin St Marie draws inspiration from the cultures that colonised the country in his marinades: don’t miss the excellent spiced pork belly, a perfect partner to a glass of fruity pinotage. Speciality dish ‘bigger braai’ comes with a selection of grilled meats accompanied by spicy ‘monkey gland’ sauce and braaibroodjie (grilled cheese sandwiches).
