The Beckford Arms

Fonthill, Gifford

Set amid the Fonthill Estate’s parkland, this 18th-century former coaching inn has long been a prime resting spot for ravenous ramblers. Dark beams, open fires and brass candlesticks are in keeping with the pub’s Romantic roots, while the menu holds good sturdy classics: whole roast chicken, carved at the table, and Huntsham pork belly with wonderfully thick, salty crackling. Desserts vary from traditional English – buttermilk pudding with gooseberry compote – to decadent French: roasted peaches with meringue, lemon curd and toasted almonds. JB. 01747 870 385
