110 Hanover Street Edinburgh
Two stone dogs guard the door, and for good reason. This city-centre spot is a treasure of honest cooking at affordable prices. Hearty stews and pies are all less than a fiver and interiors are adorned with canine paraphernalia. For an informal working lunch, it’s the dog’s proverbials. The menu champions British ingredients, and isn’t afraid to use cheaper cuts of meat. Start with devilled ox kidney on toast with lashings of bacon and mushrooms. Traditional Scottish stovies made from Cumberland sausages and potatoes make top stews, while macaroni comes piled with cauliflower cheese. LF.
