With its twin Art Deco chimneys rising over 100m above the River Thames, Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most iconic architectural landmarks. Built in the 1930s, it once generated a fifth of the capital’s electricity before finding a new life as one of the city’s most distinctive destinations for culture, food and entertainment. Come Christmas, it’s particularly atmospheric. Lights illuminate the chimneys, the scent of roasting nuts and mulled wine drifts along the riverside walkways, and skaters skim around the 200m trail at the Glide ice rink, with a vintage carousel adding to the festive scene.

After an overnight stay at a central London hotel, hop aboard Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, before disembarking at the power station’s pier. Start with a few laps of the ice, then pause for lunch and some shopping before heading to Ramses and the Pharaohs’ Gold: The Exhibition at NEON. 180 ancient Egyptian artefacts – including the cedar coffin of Ramses II and the Mask of King Amenemope – are on display in the UK for the first time. Then head skywards on the Chimney Lift Experience, rising 109m to a panoramic viewing platform overlooking the capital. Back at ground level, the power station takes on a different character after dark, its brick façade glowing beneath illuminated decorations, giant baubles and an evening light show. Round off the day with a movie at The Cinema in The Power Station.
