Italy
Whether the mountains are laden with snow or in their summer pomp, the beautifully designed blackened-larch facade of six storey spa-hotel Bühelwirt always stands out.
You’ll find this award-winning slice of contemporary architecture, in Italy’s South Tyrol region. Set against the Alpine backdrop of the stunning Ahrntal Valley, its sullen exterior gives way to a bright interior space, where glorious panoramic vistas – from which most rooms, including the sauna, benefit – and a sense of minimalism rein supreme.
Its asymmetrical roof, exposed
wood and neutral hues evoke a Scandi
mood, but don’t be fooled: its roots
are deep within the local terroir.
Furniture has been built by local
artisans; native herbs fuel wellness
treatments in the spa; and, in the
dining room, chef Michi Moser pairs
regional delicacies with local wines
curated by co-owner and in-house
sommelier, Matthias Haller. Add to
this that Klausberg’s slopes are 4km
away and you’ve got the ideal winter
hideout.
