Valpolicella, Italy
Art may be integral to many boutique hotels but few feel quite like this. More museum meets art dealer’s private home, Byblos tops the list of Italy’s more unusual stays, with a Michelin-starred restaurant and ancient wine cellar adding culinary finesse. The manicured gardens and 16th-century villa don’t look out of place in the lush Valpolicella wine region, but inside, the hotel’s true colours are revealed. Each corner houses a new discovery, with over 100 contemporary pieces sitting alongside classic frescos, with works by artists from Vanessa Beecroft to Lucio Fontana, Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol. There’s equal artistry at Amistà Restaurant, where chef Mattia Bianchi brings a refined touch to northern Italy’s abundant seasonal produce. And, for the cultural delights of Verona, just hop on the hotel’s shuttle.
