Cap Karoso, Indonesia Hotel

Sumba, Indonesia

A far cry from the well-trodden paths of Bali and Lombok, Sumba remains one of eastern Indonesia’s most untouched islands. While it shares the natural beauty of its more frequented cousins, it’s Sumba’s dramatic wilderness and authentic villages that set it apart. On arrival – via a winding dirt road sandwiched between thick jungle – it seems an unlikely place to find a modern marvel, and yet Design Hotels’ boutique Cap Karoso appeals to conscious travellers, design lovers and adventure seekers alike. A brutalist structure draws the eye, while natural roofs and interiors are inspired by Sumbanese heritage, reflected in ceramics, fabrics and artwork. Studios, suites and villas encourage indoor-outdoor living, many with direct access to the sandy beach. Sunrise yoga, holistic spa treatments and snorkelling beckon, with evenings at restaurants fuelled by the 3hs on-site farm.

Doubles from £238.
