Casa Hormiga Bacalar Hotel

Mexico

Mexico’s hotel scene keeps on advancing, and no more so than on the Yucatán, as the design edge laid out by Tulum’s trailblazers branches out across the peninsula. Enter the spirited Casa Hormiga – a jungle sanctuary near the town of Bacalar in Quintana Roo.

Crafted exclusively from local material, hushed pathways framed by plantlife lead to 18 wabi-sabi-style rooms. The aim is to connect guests to their surroundings, and a holistic approach to wellbeing is at the fore. As well as pool areas and a beach club, a ritual spa is on hand for janzu water therapy, massages, reflexology et al., along with the Nest, a creative space for yoga and sound therapy. There’s also a library filled with tomes on culture and art plus a restaurant driven by local ingredients and global travel.

Nearby, adventures include sailing and kayaking on Bacalar’s ‘seven colour’ lagoon, while it’s less than an hour to the Mayan ruins of Chacchoben and Kohunlich.
