Devon, England
Durslade Farmhouse takes its cues from the contradictions of the 400ha working farm that surrounds it. Despite the bucolic undulations of Somerset, the 18th-century building is part of the contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth. That dichotomy ensures the shoes lined up by the door include scruffy Converses from East London creatives one week and the boots of country bohemians another. Its six rooms, available for exclusive rental, reimagine the granny-chic of Bruton’s tea rooms through an art- school lens. There’s art, of course: a mural by Guillermo Kuitca in the dining room and bold canvases scattered throughout. Breakfasts are farm-fresh, while dinners at the nearby Roth Bar & Grill offer the likes of chermoula-baked aubergine. A highlight is Piet Oudolf ’s garden outside, the contemporaneous sweeps of his New York High Line planted in cottage-garden colours.
