Gaya Island Resort Hotel

When it comes to a nature retreat, Gaya Island Resort is as good as it gets. Sandwiched between a marine conservation area in the South China Sea and Borneo's lush tropical rainforest, this island stay is a sure-fire way to awaken the senses. A chorus of chirping birds, croaking frogs and squealing proboscis monkeys sets the scene from the moment you step off the speedboat and, once you’ve checked into your wooden tree house villa high in the jungle canopy, first stop is Tavajun Bay, a private, palm tree-lined beach, perhaps followed by a refreshing dip in the 40m swimming pool that runs parallel. Conservation is key here – a marine biologist and naturalist are stationed at the resort, while efforts are focused on turtle rehabilitation and protecting biodiversity. A typical day might include a guided snorkel, jungle hike, kayak through the mangroves and a Sabahan cooking class. The award-winning spa, sunset cruises and seafood barbecues on the beach take care of slower days.
