La Nauve, Hôtel & Jardin Hotel

Cognac, France

It’s rare for a wardrobe – or, indeed, a headboard – to evoke a sense of admiration, perhaps even a little longing. Yet the inlaid wood is a demonstration of such precision at the Relais & Châteaux-owned La Neuve near Cognac, it’s hard not to gaze in wonder. Much of the interior calls on local expertise – architect Éric Daigre scoured within a 50km radius for the best craftsmen and materials for the restoration of the belle époque mansion, sitting in 5ha grounds. Now visitors cross the threshold into a grand atrium and central staircase carved out of white Avy stone. The 12 rooms are exquisite, the outdoor heated pool luxurious – but it all pales into insignificance alongside the wizardry happening in the kitchen of the two restaurants, fine-dining. Notes and more casual Brasserie des Flâneurs. Arrive on an empty stomach – but be sure to leave room for a stellar breakfast.
