Michael Caines has pretty much hand-crafted his own Devonian gastronomic getaway with this country house hotel on the banks of the Exe Estuary. Stay in one of six shepherd huts, overlooking the vines of pinot noir, meunier and chardonnay, or stay closer to the action in one of the 21 rooms in the main building. Both exude the charm, class and attention to detail you expect from the Michelin-starred chef. Lounge by the heated outdoor pool with a glass of the estate’s rose, take lunch in its restaurant – sushi-light or grilled-Devon-beef-heavy – then sit down to dinner in the fine-diner in the hotel. It’s here Michael showcases the passion for his home county with the likes of warm Lyme Bay lobster salad, complemented with his chardonnay, or lamb from the nearby Powderham estate, perhaps with their pinot noir.
