Maroma Riviera Maya, Mexico Hotel

Mexico

Picture paradise and it’s likely you’re dreaming of white sand and warm blue waters alongside jungle foliage. Just add sleek interiors, a world-class bar and superb Mexican flavours – then enter Maroma. Hidden in an exclusive patch of Riviera Maya, it’s a 30-minute drive from Cancún airport (also within reach are Mayan ruins and cenotes).

Understated luxury is Belmond’s strong point, and Maroma is no exception, but recent renovations have made this resort a talking point. Designer Tara Bernerd is the mastermind, calling on local artists and craftspeople to recreate the space with Oaxaca fabrics, 700,00 individually crafted tiles and hand-carved wooden furniture.

An inviting main pool (one of three) is the place for an artisan mezcal. Chef Daniel Camacho is reinventing Mexican mainstays at Casa Mayor, while seafood is cooked over open flames at Wooden by Curtis Stone. And 72 rooms and suites are poised just steps from the private beach.

Doubles from £776.
