Kafka was on to something when he wrote that Merano was a place where time was suspended. This belle époque spa town, known for its healing thermal waters and temperate climate, has never strayed from its historical purpose.
Leaving the art nouveau architecture behind, follow the alpine passes into the foothills of the Dolomites, and you’ll find Miramonti, a family-run boutique hotel and spa perched above the Passeier Valley.
All 47 rooms blend style, serenity and seclusion. Opt for the atmospheric Craftsmen’s Homes, embodying the soul of South Tyrol, retreat to the Monti House for minimalist luxury on the forest outskirts, The Owner’s House for complete privacy, or seek out the sleek Lofts for Nordic chic.
Start the day slowly, with regional specialities, homemade pastries and frothy cappuccinos best enjoyed with a view from the terrace. Any lingering stress will evaporate when you head into the 30ha woodland – perhaps to the Forest Sauna or on a guided walk to recharge among nature.
Wherever you wander, be sure to return for lunch at Panorama restaurant, where Massimo Geromel’s creative menu relies on ingredients from nature’s larder.
Even the pools here are built with wellbeing in mind. Re-energise in the heated salt-water infinity pool that stretches to the horizon, or take your cue from Japanese tradition and soak in the Onsen pool, overlooking the dramatic Dolomites and historic city of Merano. Finish your day in the cosy, wood-panelled farmhouse parlour setting of Stube restaurant, for a taste of South Tyrolean cooking.
