8440 Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles, CA
Sunset Boulevard is steeped in Movieland lore, and this new arrival on that legendary road is a prime base for exploring West Hollywood, from the Walk of Fame to Whisky a Go Go. The Mondrian ticks all the boxes: stylish decor, good food (and service) and a brilliant location, right on Sunset Strip. Designed by Philippe Starck, the hotel dazzles with its spacious bright, white-on-white rooms that come with giant windows and orange tinted mirrors, which also work as televisions. Downstairs the Skybar is an exclusive drinking hole but the Asia de Cuba restaurant is the place to be. Here, oversized terracotta plant pots are bursting with ficus trees and flowering bougainvillea vines. The menu is heavily influenced by Asian and Latin flavours and even though the prices may be a little scary you won’t think twice about the bill by the time the food arrives. Stand-out dishes include the giant prawns in red Thai curry with rum and coconut cream, accompanied with fried brown rice and fresh lime avocado. Doubles from £220.
